Help with QuiltMargins

Getting started with QuiltMargins

Choose a tool, enter your measurements and keep a cutting plan you can use at the sewing table.

Choose the job you are working on

Start with the calculator that matches your next cut. Binding works out strips and yardage for the quilt edge. Backing plans rectangular panels; batting checks the size of the layer beneath the top. Borders and sashing build out the quilt dimensions. For individual block pieces, choose a block calculator or the fabric square cutting tool.

Enter measurements in the right units

Choose inches, centimeters or millimeters before entering a new set of measurements. You can type decimals or inch fractions such as 2 1/2. Read each field label: finished block size is different from cut square size. For fabric width, enter the usable span after leaving out the selvages. Backing and batting start with the measured quilt top.

Read the cut list and the allowances

Results update as you change a value, and Update plan runs the calculation again. Check the piece count, cut sizes and notes before cutting. When a tool reports yardage, compare the raw fabric length with the rounded amount to buy. If a measurement is missing or doesn't work, the tool hides the old result until you correct it.

Keep a copy beside your cutting mat

Print the plan or download a PDF for the sewing table. Save project keeps an editable plan in this browser. Export JSON gives you an editable file to keep elsewhere or open on another device. Browser data can be cleared, so use a downloaded project file for a backup you want to keep.

Check a sample before a full batch

The calculations help you plan the measurements you enter. They can't inspect the fabric or test your seam width. Check a strip join, sewn block or HST pair when those details affect the result. A few minutes with a sample is easier than recutting a whole quilt's worth of pieces.
