About QuiltMargins

A little help with the numbers before you cut.

Free quilt calculators for the decisions between choosing a pattern and cutting the fabric.

Work out the next step

How many binding strips do you need? Will the backing fabric you already own be long enough? What size should you cut the squares for a finished block? QuiltMargins helps you work through those questions with the measurements you have.

Choose a fabric calculator or a block calculator, enter your sizes and check the cut list. The results show the allowances used, so you can see where the numbers come from before buying or cutting fabric.

Keep the plan close to the fabric

Print a copy for the sewing table, download the cut list, or save an editable plan in your browser. The tools are free and don't require an account. Your project measurements are calculated on your device, and saved plans stay in the browser where you made them.

Leave room for the real quilt

A calculator can count strips and add seam allowances. It can't feel a fabric, inspect a print or check a sewn seam. Measure the actual material and make a sample when the result depends on your technique. The measuring and cutting guides explain the details that most often change a plan.
